Girls Can't Surf

Girls Can’t Surf Opening Titles

It's the 1980s and the world of professional surfing is a entirely driven by male egos. Directed by Christopher Nelius, Girls Can’t Surf is a documentary following the journey of a band of renegade surfers who took on the male-dominated professional surfing world to achieve equality and change the sport forever. Featuring surfing greats Jodie Cooper, Frieda Zamba, Pauline Menczer, Lisa Andersen, Pam Burridge, Wendy Botha, Layne Beachley and more.

Working closely with the Director and Writer/Editor Julie-Anne De Ruvo, we developed a treatment that reflected the punk attitude of these women and their time. We created hand made animations by paintin acid colours onto acetate. We then scratched images and messages back into the bold colour splashed onto the sheets. These images embodied the attitude of the women fighting against the odds. Typography was drawn form the magazines of the period and then dialledup to eleven.

Created with the team at That Dam Studio.
